Meet Matt McGloin

Matt McGloin grew up in a modest, working-class home in Scranton, PA, with his older brothers, Paul and John, and his parents, Paul and Catherine (Walsh). His family instilled in him the importance of being active in your community and giving back, values his time at Penn State solidified.

When Matt arrived at Penn State in 2008, he did so without a scholarship. As a preferred walk on for the football team, Coach Paterno saw something in him, and he earned a spot, playing for five years. Coach Paterno taught Matt more about being a teammate, a community member, a husband, and a father than he did about football. As starting quarterback and a leader on the team, Matt helped lead the Penn State football program, both on and off the field, through one of the most difficult periods the school has ever faced. Matt’s commitment to Penn State and his team never wavered.  In 2012, he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in journalism.

Matt took what he learned at Penn State and went on to play professional football for seven years in the NFL and XFL, retiring in 2020. Reflecting on his experiences working with local charitable causes and creating his own foundation, Matt realized his calling was a life of public service.

Currently, Matt serves as a Lackawanna County Commissioner. He helps oversee 30 departments, over 30 boards and authorities, more than 1,000 employees, and a budget north of $150 million. He is also currently the chairman of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport Joint Board of Management, as well as a board member of the Lackawanna County Opioid Fund Settlement Committee, the Lackawanna County Prison Board, and the Agency for Community Empowerment. 

Matt and his wife Bailey (a fellow alum) reside in Waverly with their sons, Marshall and Beckett, and a Labrador Retriever named Rudy.
